Bruce Davidson
USA. Alabama. Selma. 1965. Un gruppo di attivisti per i diritti civili, guidati da Martin Luther King jr., in marcia da Selma a Montgomery per protestare contro la discriminazione razziale.

Inauguriamo una nuova rubrica piccola, piccola, un cameo direi…. ogni settimana proporremo una fotografia, solo una, sconosciuta o famosissima non importa, ma comunque emblematica di un moemento della nostra storia…. La proporremo senza alcun commento, ci piacerebbe che i commenti foste voi a scriverli… Per aiutarvi in questa proposizione oltre all’immagine accluderemo anche una piccola scheda sull’autore che vi consentirà di inquadrare meglio il contesto da cui l’immagine è scaturita.

La nostra prima scelta cade su una immagine poco nota, una foto del 1965 di Bruce Davidson, fotografo di Magnum, di cui di seguito riporto una piccola scheda. Sono ansioso di sentire i vostri commenti… per intanto il nostro Davidson si esprime così: “If I am looking for a story at all, it is in my relationship to the subject – the story that tells me, rather than that I tell.” 

Bruce Davidson -  Nato in America nel 1933 a Oak Park, Illinois, Bruce Davidson vinse il primo premio del Kodak National High School Competition all’età di solo sedici anni. In seguito frequentò il Rochester Institute of Technology e poi l’università di Yale.

Fu durante il servizio militare a Parigi che Davidson incontrò Henri Cartier-Bresson, uno dei fondatori di Magnum Photos. Nel 1957 comincia a collaborare come fotografo freelance per la rivista Life, e nel 1959 egli diviene uno dei membri di Magnum.

Premiato con il  Guggenheim Fellowship nel 1962 pre aver documentato il Civil Rights Movement attraverso tutti gli Stati Uniti. Per Davidson comincia un periodo in cui il suo grande talento gli sarà decisamente riconosciuto, infatti nel 1963 il Museum of Modern Art di New York decise di dedicargli una personale retrospettiva..

Primo a ricevere il National Endowment for the Arts nel 1966, Davidson  si concentrò  per i due anni successivi nella realizzazione di un progetto davvero singolare, fotografare un isolato di New York: il risultato fu il bellissimo libro fotografico dal titolo: “East 100th Street” che raccoglie le immagini di questo spaccato di Spanish Harlem.

Davidson estese la sua visione della città con “Subway”, nel quale esplorò il mondo sotterraneo della metropolitani di New York, prima che diventasse feticcio; e dopo con “Central Park”, un progetto fotografico della durata di quattro anni dedicato all’omonimo parco newyorchese. Il film di Davidson “Living Off the Land”, anch’esso avente come soggetto la grande mela fu premiato con il Critics Award all’American Film Festival.

Henry Geldzahler, il former Curatordel MoMa di New York, ebbe a dire di lui:  “The ability to enter so sympathetically into what seems superficially an alien environment remains Bruce Davidson’s sustained triumph; in his investigation he becomes the friendly recorder of tenderness and tragedy”.

Davidson attualmente vive e lavora a New York City.
