Ron Haviv, Blood and Honey: A Balkan War Journal

Ho sempre amato questa foto, come fin da ragazzo ho adorato l’autore delle righe che seguono, tanto che negli anni del liceo alcuni tra alunni e professori avevano preso l’abitudine di soprannominarmi il biografo di Joyce. Per chi non avesse familiarità con questo classico, sono le ultime righe di “The Dead”, l’ultima delle storie della raccolta “Dubliners” (1914) di James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (2 Febbraio 1882 – 13 Gennaio 1941). Righe che trovo un appropriato commento a questa fotografia, che mostra dei soldati americani durante il conflitto jugoslavo, immagine tratta da “Blood and Honey: A Balkan War Journal”.

“…It had begun to snow again. He watched sleepily the flakes, silver and dark, falling obliquely against the lamplight. The time had come for him to set out on his journey westward. Yes, the newspapers were right: snow was general all over Ireland. It was falling on every part of the dark central plain, on the treeless hills, falling softly upon the Bog of Allen and, farther westward, softly falling into the dark mutinous Shannon waves. It was falling, too, upon every part of the lonely churchyard on the hill where Michael Furey lay buried. It lay thickly drifted on the crooked crosses and headstones, on the spears of the little gate, on the barren thorns. His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead.”

L’autori di questa immagine a confine tra il sogno e l’incubo è un americano di nome Ron Haviv.
A molti questo nome dirà poco, anzi non sarei sorpreso se tra il pubblico di questo forum, fosse poco meno che sconosciuto. E’ un nome da addetti ai lavori, eppure il suo lavoro di fotogiornalista è cosi denso, pregnante, rumoroso e capace…
Vincitore di diversi premi come il World Press Photo, Pictures of the Year, Overseas Press Club, e la prestigiosa Leica Medal of Excellence,  Ron Haviv ha coperto, realizzando alcune delle più importanti immagini, tutte le crisi umanitarie e politiche dalla fine della guerra fredda a oggi.

Co-fondatore dell’ Agenzia VII, i suoi lavori sono stati pubblicati da tutte le più importanti testate giornalistiche del mondo, quali, ad esempio : [W:Fortune], [W:The NY Times Magazine], [W:Time], [W:Vanity Fair | rivista], [W:Paris Match] e [W:Stern].

Haviv è anche l’autore di due portfolio di enorme importanza “Blood and Honey: A Balkan War Journal”,  dedicato appunto alla guerra nei Balcani, e un secondo lavoro sull’Afghanistan,  “On the Road to Kabul”; due portfolio, che hanno dato origine a due grandi libri. I suoi lavori sono poi presenti anche in numerose altre pubblicazioni collettive e cataloghi.
